The state is also known for its abundant forest resources. Assam is also known as the "land of Blue Hills and Red River". Assam is home to the one-horned Indian rhinoceros, along with the wild water buffalo, pygmy hog, tiger and various species of Asiatic birds, and provides one of the last wild habitats for the Asian elephant.

Kaziranga National Park is the most popular wildlife tourist destination in North East. The Kaziranga National Park is most famous for its one-horned rhino population, which is the largest in the world. The total number of rhinos in this national park is about 2400.This is the first National Park in Assam and is spread over an area of 400 sq. km. The Kaziranga National Park is located along the river Brahmaputra boarding the Karbi Anglong hills. The area is declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site and is home to some of the most fascinating wildlife. Apart from the rhinoceros, other large mammals that dwell in this National Park include the Asiatic elephant, Wild buffalo, and tiger and swamp deer.
The landscape of Kaziranga is of sheer forest known as the Burma Monsoon Forests. The area is part of the floodplains of the mighty Brahmaputra River. The habitat consists primarily of tall, dense grasslands interspersed with canebrakes, open woodlands, interconnecting streams, and lakes. The primary vegetation includes alluvial grasslands, tropical wet semi-evergreen and evergreen forests.

Manas National Park is the second UNESCO world heritage site in Assam; the other one is Kaziranga National Park. The Manas National Park is situated in the Himalayan foothills and extends to Bhutan where it is known as the Royal Manas National Park. It was declared a sanctuary in 1928 and became a National Park in the year 1990. Manas is also a Project Tiger Reserve, an Elephant Reserve, and a Biosphere Reserve. The unparallel scenic beauty of the densely forested National Park along with its rare wildlife makes a trip to Manas a truly enthralling experience.
Nameri National Park is one of the most beautiful forest in Assam and it’s located in the foothills of the eastern Himalaya in the Sonitpur district of Assam. Wildlife and forest visits are the primary attraction of the forests. The Park also gives an opportunity to the tourists for water sports activities. River rafting, swimming, and sunbathing can be enjoyed in the different river islands.
