Cherrapunji, also known as Sohra, is a popular tourist destination located in the state of Meghalaya in northeastern India. Cherrapunjee town is located in the Khasi Hills of the Meghalaya district. It is situated 1430 meters above sea level. Cherrapunjee, a subdivision town in the East Khasi Hill District. The British mispronounced the word Sohra as Cherra and the Bengali word Punjee, meaning a cluster, got added to the name later. In 2007, the state government, at the request of the locals, removed the name Cherrapunjee and reinstated the original name of Sohra.

Jowai is a small town and the district headquarter of the West Jaintia hill district of Meghalaya. Jowai town is a cultural and commercial pivot of this region and its history goes back to the times when the Pnar kings were the dominant force in the region. It has a monument dedicated to the most famous Jaintia freedom fighter – Kiang Nong Bah.
